The Emirates Literature Foundation has teamed up with the creative writing school of major UK literary agency Curtis Brown to bring bestselling author Laura Barnett (The Versions of Us, Greatest Hits) to Dubai to teach two courses for new and experienced writers. This is the first time that Curtis Brown Creative courses have been held in Dubai.
“This is an unmissable opportunity for those who want to write but don’t know where to start, or established writers who want to sharpen their writing skills and learn from a bestselling author,” said Isobel Abulhoul, CEO and Trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation. “We are thrilled to welcome Laura to Dubai. She is a fantastic writer, keen to impart her knowledge to the writing community here. Curtis Brown is one of the most illustrious literary agencies in the world and their writing school, Curtis Brown Creative, has a fantastic track record with 64 former students having won commercial publishing deals. Doing these courses should be a priority for anyone in Dubai who is serious about their writing.”
The first three-day course for beginners (11-13 October) will help emerging writers unlock their creativity and start writing fiction, with a focus on character and place, put them on the path to discovering their own style. It will feature tutor-led discussion to inspire ideas and writing exercises to get creative juices flowing. Each member of the group will also receive a 20-minute individual tutorial with the tutor. The course costs AED 2,650.
The advanced writing course (17-19 October) is for those already working on a novel or short story who would like some expert help to develop it. Applicants are required to submit the opening of their novel-in-progress or short story (up to 3,000 words) and a one-page synopsis by 25 August 2019. Fifteen students will be accepted based on the material submitted. The course costs AED 2,650 (AED 650 refundable deposit to be paid on application).
Successful applicants for the advanced course will take part in writing workshops and have the chance to delve deeper into the processes that underpin good writing and editing through the experienced knowledge of a best-selling author. It is also an opportunity to create a network of support that can be invaluable to writers throughout their career. Every student will receive a 20-minute individual tutorial, focused on their work in progress, and the course will culminate in an elevator pitch workshop with verbal feedback from the tutor.
Both courses are limited to 15 participants and are open to those aged 18 and over. The courses will take place at the Creative Space in the Crowne Plaza, Dubai Festival City and include lunch each day at Anise restaurant in the adjoining InterContinental hotel. Registrations are now open for both courses with full payment of AED 2,650 required by 5 September 2019.
