NYC-based Loom Ensemble are back for their 6th year of theater making in Dubai. The group will perform four free to attend shows from March 28,29 and April 4,5 at Sima Performing Arts in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai.
This “post-modern dance-theater Rom-Com” showcases local talent, alongside NYC professionals Neva Cockrell and Raphael Sacks. The shows are 75 minutes, and will feature 12 performers, including a combination of dance, physical theater, acting, and original music.
Titled Default Mind, the concept follows Ted and Melaina as they struggle for their own wellbeing against the Body Shame Industrial Complex, and a culture of self-hate. This inner journey is played out through high-intensity ensemble dance and dynamic physical partnering. The audience witness the hilarious side of each character's emotional life as their subconscious gremlins shake them to the bones, reminding them of what their parents always said and what their default culture thinks of them.
The show dramatizes Ted and Melaina experience as they navigate through their childhood trauma, swimming through the sea of new "self-help" techniques, and trying to be honest -- but not too honest -- as they learn to love each other, and learn to love themselves.
"The blossoming of contemporary art culture in Dubai has been amazing to witness", said Loom co-founder Raphael Sacks. "Since we first starting teaching and performing at the jamjar in 2012, the UAE has shown just how much potential there is for a fully homegrown, grassroots professional dance and theater community,” she added.
Previous Loom Ensemble programs have been showcased in Italy, Belgium, Berlin, New York and more. In the UAE, Loom Ensemble artists Neva Cockrell and Raphael Sacks have performed at DUCTAC, Madinat Theatre, the Fridge, SIKKA, American University of Sharjah and other venues.
All shows are free to attend and start at 8pm. For more information, please visit www.loomensemble.com
