GPP Photo Week 2019 Programme

The Gulf Photo Plus(GPP) Photo Week is the longest-running international photography event in the Middle East. The events 2019’s schedule of workshops, talks, photo walks, exhibitions and special events is set to kick off on February 4th and will run until February 9th at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai.

Here's what to watch out for.


Simple & Manual Control of Your Camera | A Street Photography Primer

Spend a day learning ways to use your camera faster and more intuitively, the way you'd need to use it on the streets. You will work in class through techniques such as zone-focus, fixed WB, limited ISO adjustments, uses of prime lenses, and seeing like the camera sees to help you get faster and more intuitive when shooting on the streets. You will understand how to anticipate the light, save time, and find greater accuracy in your exposures and compositions. In the second half of the class we will apply and practice the settings around Alserkal Avenue.


Tackling Street Photography

This workshop is for the photographer who is committed to improving, so you will jump right in with a shared critique session of your previous work, either street photography or other genres. Maciej will intersperse the discussion by sharing the common pitfalls of street photography and how to avoid them, showing inspirational street work and pointing out what makes a meaningful and dynamic street image.


The Fundamentals of Architectural Photography

One and a half day workshop

At the end of the workshop, you’ll receive focused feedback on your images, and Mike will demonstrate his workflow process and go-to tools in Photoshop, for which he’ll offer a handout that you can take home for reference later, as you edit your future architectural and interior shoots.


Chroma: Studio in Color
Nick Fancher

Level: Lighting - Intermediate
One day workshop

  • Tuesday, February 5 - 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

Nick will begin with a discussion of color theory, gels, and white balance, then examines how to determine which colors complement your subject matter. He covers topics such as:

  • Balancing, mixing, and overpowering ambient light with artificial light
  • How (and why) to light with color, even when the end goal is a black and white image
  • Layering colors for unique color combinations
  • Mixing hard and soft light to achieve extremely rich color
  • Lighting detail and texture
  • Modifier options, such as ring flash, snoots, barn doors, gobos, softboxes, and even using projectors
  • Post-processing for vibrant, powerful colors


Get Lit! Lighting With Projectors (Wed)

One day workshop

  • Wednesday, February 6 - 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

This workshop will cover:

  • What kind of projector to use (how bright? short throw versus long throw?)
  • How to create custom patterns for projection
  • Using projector as backdrop.
  • Using projector as “body paint”
  • Balancing projector with strobe(s)
  • Using projectors in combination with long exposure, multiple exposure, or shutter drag

This workshop breaks lighting techniques down into its various categories and delves into them one by one for a workshop that is as intensive and deep as it is broad. You’ll learn to unlock the power of simplicity with traditional light sources, explore alternative approaches and tools that elevate basic lighting into an art form of its own.

Person and Persona: The Creative Side of Self-Portraiture

One day workshop

In this 1-day workshop with Sara Lando, you will be talking in detail about the technical side of taking a self portrait. You'll learn how to focus on a subject that isn't in front of the camera, how to set up a decent frame when you can’t see yourself through the viewfinder, but most of all, you’ll explore all the creative possibilities that open up when you’re both photographer and subject.


Shooting Music & Fashion
Valentina Vee

Level: Video - Confident Beginner

One day workshop

  • Tuesday, February 5 - 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll have rare access to a model and fashion pieces in order to shoot a lookbook video, together with your fellow workshop participants. Your instructor, Valentina Vee, will cover techniques that are especially useful in music and fashion, such as overcranking (slow motion), light spill effects, and how to incorporate dancing and music into a seamless dynamic shot.

Studio on Your Shoulder
Zack Arias
Level: Lighting - Confident Beginner

One day workshop

  • Wednesday, February 6 - 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Working with one camera body (a DSLR or mirrorless, the lighter, the better), a few conversion lenses, a few hot shoe flashes, and a few modifiers, walk and shoot with Zack in a variety of locations and lighting conditions. With your minimal kit, you will capitalize on your mobility to walk the streets and take studio-quality portraits while you are out and about.


Panel discussion

That aim to highlight the homegrown talent from around the region. The panel will include Aqib Anwar, Altamash Javed and Huda Bin Redha

GPP Scholarship

Will provide one emerging photographer from the MENASA region with a complimentary space in Tanya Habjouqa’s four-day workshop The Red Pill: Uncharted Territories of Personal Narrative Liberation. For further information on how to apply for the scholarship, interested applicants should click here

The ShootOut

The traditional curtain closer of GPP Photo Week, will see three professional photographers pitted against one another and the clock as they rush to shoot and process the best possible photograph in only 20 minutes in front of a live audience who decide the winner.
