The region’s first cross-disciplinary design university, the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) is giving its pre-college students and keen designers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world design and to learn something new throughout Dubai Design Week. From an exhibition that explores the development of legendary chair designer, Panton (pictured above), to interactive workshops, you will leave DIDI feeling inspired.

Kursi Exhibition

DIDI’s debut collaborative exhibition, Kursi, takes a look at the creation and development of the iconic Panton chair. Partnering with Vitra and tasking its students with a six-week design challenge of designing a chair for generation Z, using Panton as inspiration, Kursi will feature both student designs and as well as Vitra’s limited edition Panton chairs CHROME & GLOW, developed especially to mark the 50th anniversary.

Date: 12th to 17th November 2018

Time: 10 am – 10:00 pm

Location: Atrium, Building 4, Dubai Design District

Tessellation - Schools Design Challenge

Take part in a MENASA-wide collaborative project where high school students work together with geometry to solve design problems and create a large-scale public sculpture at DIDI. High school students are encouraged to drop in and explore design with DIDI at its creative design challenge speed workshops.

In this hands-on drop-in workshop, participants will learn about design thinking and how to create patterns and volume with two-dimensional cut-out shapes. Students across the region will work together with geometry to solve design problems and create a large-scale collaborative sculpture that will be displayed outside DIDI in d3 during Dubai Design Week.

Date: 12th to 15th November 2018

Time: 10 am – 2:00 pm

Location: DIDI, Building 4, Dubai Design District

Digital Workshop – Mixed Realities

Pre-college students are invited to explore the near-future of mixed-reality virtual design through a fun, hands-on design workshop.  In this workshop for pre-college students, hosted by DIDI faculty member Sayjel Patel, participants work together using the Unity3D Video Game Engine to create their very own ‘mixed-reality’ software applications that will be exhibited at DIDI.

As physical and virtual spaces become increasingly blurred and inter-connected, ‘mixed-reality’ is inspiring new forms of technological research and design across many fields from architecture to sports, medicine and even fashion.

Date: Friday 16th November

Time: 10 am – 12:00 pm

Location: DIDI, Building 4, Dubai Design District

Chair Design Workshop

Pre-college students are invited to learn furniture design principles and prototype a scale model of their own chair. DIDI’s Associate Dean, Hani Asfour, and Fabrication Laboratory Manager and Product Designer, Hernan Hoentsch lead this hands-on workshop in chair design for pre-college students.

After visiting DIDI’s chair design exhibition, in association with Vitra, the students are taught furniture design principles and shown how to prototype a scale model of their own chair design.
