The Louvre Abu Dhabi has curated a new world first, a roadside billboard exhibition. Along the widely used Sheikh Zayed road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, at 10 km intervals, works of art and artefacts will be displayed on large billboards. In a unique and innovative way, the gallery has brought art to the people, rather than waiting for them to come to art.
The initiative aims to open doors of the art world to a greater number of people living in the UAE, and to introduce the subject to people previously un-engaged with the Arts.
As you drive along the highway you can even listen to short informational talks about the artworks on display. Just tune into one of the following Radio stations: Radio 1 FM (100.5 FM), Classic FM (91.6 FM) or Emarat FM (95.8 FM) the audio will automatically trigger as you drive along the road.
The billboard exhibition will run for four weeks over the month of innovation ending in mid-March.
Displayed artworks include Van Gogh's 1887 self-portrait, the Mari-Cha lion (1000-1200) one of the first known mechanical statues, and a portrait of the USA's first president George Washington.
For those heading to Abu Dhabi from Dubai or vice versa a welcome break from the mundane highway is definitely something to look forward to.
