How many times have you left a play in Dubai, your soul stirred and eyes still moist from magic you just experienced? This is the feedback The Hive’s first staging of William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker received. Right from the sets, to the acting, music and the overall production values received rave reviews from everyone who attended.
Owing to great word of mouth and audiences who left wanting more, the production is coming back to The Junction from the 27th to the 29th of April 2017. The cast and crew are hard at work to ensure they re-create the magic of their first performance which left Dubai theater enthusiasts spellbound.
For the uninitiated, The Miracle Worker the inspiring story based on Helen Keller’s life and how her teacher and lifelong companion Annie Sullivan turned hers and her family’s life around through perseverance, love and compassion. Helen went on to become a symbol of courage and hope for people from all walks of life, this is a testament to Annie’s unwavering love and dedication to her ward.
Describing his interpretation of William Gibson’s classic, director Jimish Thakkar says “Being a father of two and a drama educator it hit the right nerve. Each theme is reflective of our busy lives. How family dynamics influence life decisions. How one person’s determination and perseverance can change these dynamics and affect everyone involved. Finally, understanding the difference between pity and love and being able to use the various aspects of love to create positive change offer us insights into how we see and interact with our children and how it affects them and their future. Directing the play has given me an opportunity to introspect my understanding of each of the themes and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to stage it.”
An additional treat for theatre-goers is the production will be staged to look like a black and white movie, which is a unique first for the Dubai theatre circuit. This will be achieved through the wonderful mix of make-up, special lighting and meticulous costuming.
This production is for anyone who has a family and knows how dysfunctional ties can become, anyone who has children and understands the joys and anguish of raising them, most of all for anyone who knows how life throws curveballs at us and only pure perseverance and nothing but love is the solution to them.
The Miracle Worker runs at The Junction, Alserkal Avenue, from April 27-29. Tickets start at Dh100. Tickets are available at tixbox
